RESEARCH: In able to manage our natural resources effectively, and help troubled stocks recover, we must gather and share the most recent research with the general public. Sport fishers, in particular, can use new techniques that can affect recovery. In many areas much more research is needed. Some of the federal assessments of groundfish stocks off our coast are suspect, but we don't have the hard data to correct them. We still need an effective way of returning federally listed rockfish, like Canary and Yelloweye, back to the depts so they don't die. Scientists are currently working on computer models that can help determine the strength of many of our ocean stocks, but they need our support for continued funding. Much research has been done on how to make our hatcheries more effective without harming wild runs of steelhead and salmon. If you gather all those findings together, it shows a direction to restore plentiful, self-sustating runs in a reasonable time frame. There is a definite need to let the public know what ALL the latest science says. We are currently throwing away millions of dollars each year for fish recovery, with few positive results. But yet there are studies that propose better and quicker ways of helping fish stocks. Together we can make a difference!
